The Wine in Portugal
Red, white, green, rosé, muscatel, champagne: wine, that is nothing more than an alcoholic drink that is formed from the juice of fermented grapes, has a major role in the life of the portuguese people.
Vineyard cultivation in Portugal is first attributed to the Tartessus tribe, a people that inhabited the Iberian Peninsula around 2000 a.C and that maintained comercial relation with eastern and southern mediterranean peoples. However, archaeological traces suggest that wine was already known long before. The diversity of the portuguese wines started with the introduction of new varieties, brought by the phoenicians, greeks and celts. Later, during the Roman Empire, the wine industry grew and suffered a huge modernization process: new species spread and cultivation and production techniques were perfected. The wine’s cultural weight was already so much that not even the long centuries of muslim occupation were enough to diminish its importance.
When Portugal was formed as a country, vineyard plantation was fundamental amongst the chores of populating, cleaning and cultivating the conquered land. Religious Orders became the chief wine producers during the Middle Ages, when new varieties were also introduced, due to their experiences or brought by pilgrims. From Burgundy arrived french species and, from eastern Europe, varieties such as muscatel were imported.
It was in Portugal that the first wine demarcation land came to be, during the XVIII, by orders of Marquês de Pombal, with the creation of the Douro Demarcated Wine Region.
Portugal’s diversified weather and soils are propitious to the vineyard cultivation, which has a growing importance in the national economy. Demarcated wine regions run from north to south of the country and there are hundreds of thousands of wine producers in Portugal.
Portuguese wine is becoming more and more recognized and worldwide appreciated, which has allowed the growth of the national wine regions with less tradition. This is the example of Algarve, which has been showing a huge development in the vineyard culture and wine production.
